ARTIST INTERVIEW SERIES  -  Darlene Nguyen-Ely  -  Seattle Sculptor

ArtTRUST - Your unusual sculpture medium appears as paper stretched over a wooden frame . . . are your sculptures light weight?
Darlene - Yes, all my works are light weight but I do not use paper. I use fiberglass, wood strips, sometimes aluminum sheets over the wooden frame.
I have been making mixed media sculptures for the past seven years, enjoying the freedom of expression it gives me.

ArtTRUST - How did you get started with this medium?
Darlene - A hard question . . . I guess I was influenced by a lot of big name sculptors in Los Angeles who used unusual materials during the time I was in college. I feel very comfortable, using this medium as if I was born with it.

ArtTRUST - You state that you listen to classical music while you work, does it inspire you?
Darlene -  Classical music helps me relax and be creative.

ArtTRUST - Your Rockwell commission and some of your earlier art seems to be a different medium?
Darlene - For my commission with the Rockwell Corp., I used wood strips over the wooden frame and the piece has photo collage in it.  At that time I made many works this way.
My work is continuing to evolve over time and I continue to explore different materials.

ArtTRUST - Your Bass Museum piece has an aluminum skin, is this a departure for you?
Darlene - No, not a departure, I just like to explore many different materials as much as I could to see how far I can go to make the work interesting.

ArtTRUST - You state that you are moving to Hawaii, is this for inspiration?
Darlene - I am planning to move to the Big Island of Hawaii within the next five years if things are going smoothly. I guess it is for inspiration and also for pleasure. I always dreamed of living in Hawaii because it reminds me of Vietnam.
The land that I have purchased is in the countryside far from any big city. It is very peaceful , quiet and it has the view of the Pacific Ocean looking East toward Vietnam. I am very excited to find out on how the new environment will influence my future body of work and what will they look like . . . Similar to moving to the Seattle area from Los Angeles . . . my work has evolved a lot.

ArtTRUST - Your sculpture seens delicate, will it ship easily?
Darlene - My work looks delicate but it is a very durable material and can be ship easily.

ArtTRUST - Does your medium limit the size of sculpture you can create?
Darlene - No, the medium does not limit the size of my work. I can create sculpture as large as I can handle easily. If I had a big space to create and to store the work, I will make them bigger . The sculpture could be created as large as an outdoor monument, but I would need hired assistants to help me build it.
