Old World Painting Secrets

ArtTRUST - Your use of color is most exceptional, where did you get your boldness?
Linda - My mother was a master gardener, so I grew up surrounded by rich purples, bright reds, yellows, and oranges and all the vivid color of nature.

ArtTRUST - When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
Linda - In graduate school, I quickly "drew" an answer to complete an exam on time and received an Honors grade.  I realized then, the potential to communicate with pictures and made it my life's work.

ArtTRUST - Who is your favorite painter, a mentor, perhaps?
Linda Matisse is my artistic hero. I have been inspired by his images since the first one I saw. His use of color, composition, and sense of patterning evoke a happy message.

ArtTRUST - Where do you get your creative ideas?
Linda - People, laughter, flowers, and music (especially Latin music) all have a huge influence on my work.

ArtTRUST - How do you decide where to start on a painting?
Linda - Occasionally the images are formed in my mind before I ever touch the canvas.  Other times, a painting will begin with a scribble and go through a development process to the finish.

ArtTRUST -  Do you think posters are a good way to spread "happy" art?
Linda - Multiples (such as posters and greeting cards) are just one avenue for artists to show their work.

ArtTRUST Do you get best marketing results from shows or mailing of photos?
Linda - Direct mailing of photo packages. It takes time but you never know when your work might be exactly what the publisher or gallery is looking for.

ArtTRUST Do you feel your training in classical music colors your creativity?
Linda - Music and art are "close companions" in my life. They are also closely intertwined in my work.

ArtTRUST Since your art is an effective means of communication for you, what is your predominant message?
Linda - Painting is a joyful experience for me.I hope it would be uplifting in some positive way for others. If I can get a smile from a viewer then my work is complete.

ArtTRUST - Have you any realistic work?
Linda -  I worked in oil portraits for a while but changed to acrylics because its quick drying and allows for faster producing.

ArtTRUST -  Do you have any advice for other artists?
Linda - Yes, create from your heart, then market, market, market.  Send out hundreds of photo packages and ignore the "no's," it only takes one yes from a Gallery, Publisher, or Designer to give your career a boost . . . Persevere ! ! !

A Virginia artist with a great sense of color, she utilizes the bold, bright and vibrant colors to create her happy world.

Her classical music influences her paintings as she calls it "the language of our souls."
