Interview with Diane
ArtTRUST Why do you specialize in watercolor? Diane I started with Watercolor because I thought it would be the easiest, I was wrong, I know now it is the most difficult of all of the painting mediums. But I still like it best. It is fun to watch the paint mixing and swirling, it almost paints by itself. ArtTRUST Where do you get most of your inspirations? Diane I have been an amateur photographer for many years, so I take my own photos and paint from them. I love being in the digital age, it makes it so much faster and easier to get photos to paint. My husband says I paint the flavor of the month because I like to do so many different genres. ArtTRUST Whom do you consider a mentor? Diane There are many, but I would guess Amy Hill Imler, I paint with her group every Thursday and everyone contributes. It is a unique blend of personalities and we all mentor each other. ArtTRUST Why do you paint? Diane It is scary and fascinating to put paint on a white surface. It is invigorating and calming. There are so many emotions that it is hard to narrow it down. Mainly I think it is to master the challenge. ArtTRUST Do you have favorite colors and why? Diane In art, I love the quinacridones because of their vibrancy. Quinacridones are the reds and pinks. I like jewel colors and earth colors, also paints that granulate. I prefer to buy a lot of colors instead of mixing my own. It is more fun to me to see colors come out of the tube, They are so wonderful there is no need to mix. ArtTRUST Did your teaching career shape your interest in art?Diane Not at all, I was a Home Ec major, but had a lot of color theory, I taught Social Studies and Career Orientation, never art. ArtTRUST Where does your fascination with flowers come from? Diane I have A BROWN THUMB, and maybe that is why I love lowers so much, I love the ones with the bright colors and lots of petals. I like the way the petals curve, they are a challenge and I guess I like challenges. ArtTRUST Where would you like your art to take you? Diane I love for my name to be recognized. My first goal was to hang at the REP, then I had to set new goals. So far I have reaching them and having to make new achievable ones. It would be super to have my art hanging in one of the "big" local galleries. I also would love to be known for my portraits, which so far have only been for family. I am now entering some national level competitions, and am teaching watercolor. ArtTRUST Do you paint to sell or for your own satisfaction? Diane Mostly for my own satisfaction. I have paintings hanging all over my home, and change them often. It is like getting an extra cherry on top when I sell one.
