ART TIPS and TRIP SAVERS

When NOT to BUY QUALITY ART !

There is a lot of "junk" on the art market and there is a place for it.  You can use it for temporary party decorations, young children's rooms, or parade floats and festival décor.

So What is QUALITY ART ?
Here are some guidelines and questions to use for measuring the quality of the artwork you are think you would like to buy.
1.  Is it obviously a creation of a skilled craftsman or artisan ?
2.  Is the finish and the medium likely to last more than a few years ?
3.  Does the design have a subtle effect on your emotions ?
4.  Most importantly, do you like it ?

If you want to brighten your world and enhance your environment, stick with well designed, quality artwork.

WHAT MAKES ART VALUABLE ?
The value in art is a combination of several factors . . .
A.  Supply and Demand
, the same factors that create value in anything.
   1.  Generally, market value is found in artists who have created a large volume of work. (supply)
   2.  Demand can be generated by such factors such as marketing skill of the artist or his agent; popularity and genius of the artist; and exposure time, i.e. is the name a household word?
B.  Publicity is a major influence on the value of artwork.
   1.  Exhibitions, news and catalogs of exhibitions, and tv documentaries.
   2.  News of a Museum purchase . . .
   3. News of the artist death . . .         when the artist dies, the supply is automatically limited to a finite number.

HOW TO SELECT A PAINTING !
There are several steps and a logical order to making a successful painting purchase . . .

1.  Select a location to hang your art !
2.  Take note of that area's color family !
3.  Measure to know the maximum size !
4.  Select a painting that you like !
5.  Try it in the space for confirmation !
6.  Determine how it should be framed !

Of all the steps outlined above, the most important is selecting a painting that you like. You can find plenty of paintings in the right color family and many in the size-range you need.
The second most important step is trying the artwork in the location you selected.
If your painting meets most of the criteria for quality and has some of the characteristics that make art valuable, then you have made a great selection

WHAT IS GOOD SCULPTURE ?
There are several good ways to measure the quality of a three dimensional, original artwork . . . check the material, the workmanship, originality, the artist's reputation, and the visual appeal.

HOW to DISPLAY SCULPTURE !

  • Sculpture is 3-dimensional, therefore requires a different approach from the wall-hung art forms.
  • Sculpture can, and usually should, occupy a space where it can be viewed from any direction.
  • Most quality sculpture, except bas-relief, will have a visual presence almost anywhere in the space.
  • Almost all pieces have an ideal viewing height and a preferred viewing angle. This information can be derived by discussion with the artist or experimentation in the setting.
  • Integrating sculpture into your home can easily be achieved by using an existing table for display in lieu of a special pedestal.

Abstract sculpture and paintings can enhance a traditional home much like mixing old and new with antiques in a contemporary home.
Interior decorators use this mixing technique in most instances, just browse through the home decorating magazines.
Don't be afraid to try a beautiful 3-dimensional form on the antique table in your family room.

HOW TO BUY ART !

As you know, there are many places to buy art.  Galleries are usually the first thing that comes to mind.  Art Auctions, both physical and the online variety are other widely attended art sales vehicle.
Many people visit galleries and interior decorators because they have no confidence in their own selections. This is effective, but the assistance comes with a price.  Most artists increase the posted value to include this cost.

ECONOMICAL SOURCES
The best source of original art are the artists, themselves.  When you deal directly with the artist, you eliminate the middleman and can usually negotiate fair value.
Art shows and festivals offer perfect opportunities to have face-to-face dealings with the artists. A trip to the artist studio or home is another great buying opportunity.

TRY IT ON FOR SIZE
If you are living in the same community as the artist, you can usually take it out on approval.  Many times the artist will bring it to your home or office to assist you with placement.
If it is a painting, the artist can also offer advice about framing, grouping, and color selections. If it is sculpture, the artist may deliver the work, give pedestal advice, and offer positioning and lighting suggestions.

INTERNET SOURCES
The internet has opened the world of art as never before and placed it at your fingertips.  You can view photos of artwork from some of the best artists in the world.
Your final decision using only photos of original art displayed on websites is a risky process.  Unless you personally know the artist and/or have seen the work in a show, you cannot be sure about the artwork you might receive.
